"A Long Way Gone"

The book "A Long Way Gone" tells the real story of the author Ishmael Beah himself, a former child soldier in Sierra Leone, was published in Chinese in Jan., this year.  I saw it in a bookstore on Sunday and loved it immediately.  I read several pages of this book in the taxi on the way to my office this morning. After I left the office at 18:00pm. I could not help reading it again when standing in the elevator, walking slowly on the pavement, waiting for the red traffic light, seating on the bench in metro... My heartstrings were touched so much sometimes into tears. When I got back home, it was 19:50pm. It took one more hour on the way than usual, but i didn't feel that long. I kept reading till midnight, till the last line on the last page! A great book indeed! - It reminds me a slogan of a TV "The world is thinking..."

Great Love

Tears came into my eyes almost every night since 5.12.  I've been so touched for the great love between all kinds of people in such a disaster.  Blood, sweat, breath were melted into all the devotions to save a life, among the howling mountains!  Loving, helping and supporting each other brings thousands of millions of people together - they survived, they survived!

Creative Photography Workshop

Workshop

Paul In Beijing

Paul came to China on Mar.19 and left this morning.  It has been more than 3 years since we met last time in 2004.  With his new elegant hat and strange temp teeth brace I could hardly recognize him in the airport.  When our conversation started from the discussion of the unusual complicated Chinese charactors displayed on the wall in the arrival hall, immediately I was pretty sure this is the real Paul, Paul Battley, the old freind that I've known.

So far, I've seen many interesting people.  Paul is one of the outstanding ones.  He is a languages "cultivator", a folk culture "sensor", a symbol reader, an independent traveler, a music instruments player, a social political commentator... well, among all these hobbiies, he is actually a dedicated software developer. Anyway, his interests in varied areas always fasinate me.

Other than my interviews for my new job and his trip to Xi'An for a couple days, we spent most of time traveling together around Beijing.  From walking in the developing areas in CBD to climbing through the total 19 towers in Badaling Great Wall... I followed him, observed him and tried to find out something interesting with him by photography. Here are some of the results:

I.  In Houhai Hutong (后海胡同), Paul put his hat on then turned around and walked forward...

1. Paul and His Hat 1, 2. Paul and His Hat 2, 3. Paul and His Hat 3, 4. Paul and His Hat 4, 5. Back

II.  Detected in Panjiayuan Antique Market(潘家园古玩市场)
III. Climbing Up and Down on the BADALING Great Wall (八达岭长城) For 5 Hours
IV.  Afternoon Cafe in Jianwai SOHO (建外SOHO)
V.   Beer & Fashion in Houhai Hutong
... ...
(more photos will be uploaded in the album with the same title)

Paul used to dislike being photographed, however, it turned out he was very "camera friendly" and expressionistic.

At the moment that I'm writing now, Paul is on the way back home - London.  After seeing him off and visiting the new T3 in the airport, I was back to my place and prepared to go to work tomorrow.

Everybody's life can be intersting, we keep moving...

Light Burning To The Night

Here is the photo taken yesterday in my meeting with with Mr. Muller.  He was the glasses wearer while I am the note taker.  He speaks English with strong accent of French or sometimes even just French.  Anyway, the topic of "humanity and life" we talked of is exactly what I've been pursuing for in my dream of photography, so I tryed my best to understand his creative ideas with my imagination.  On my way home, I thought of the old story in Han dynasty, about "learning". Shikuang(师旷) explained to Jinwen Gong (晋文公): "少而好学,如日出之阳;壮而好学,如日中之光;老而好学,如炳(秉)烛之明". I think maybe this old gentleman with his new ideas is just like the light burning to the night.

PIANO NIGHT

 Piano Night

Meow's Language Diversity ("喵"的语言差异)

Asked by a good flickr friend cathzilla about how to say meow in Chinese when we talked on her amazing photo, so here it is:  - it sounds much more "point-blank" than "meow". This reminds me a similar funny story about how to say "love" in French and Chinese: During a dinner in SEDAN, France last year, I was chatting with my two French colleagues, a guy and a lady. The guy spent about 10 seconds saying "a-i-m-e-r" - just like singing a very romantic touching opera. Then they asked me how to say love in Chinese? I told them it's "ai4". The lady laughed out loud and spouted "so short!"...  Languages' diversity always amaze me no matter how they're communicated - with jokes, via paintings?  Fine! ;)

Managing Budgets VS Photographing (预算管理与摄影的类比)

Just like "the most successful manager is not the one with the largest budget; he or she is the one who makes best use of the budegt available.*", the most outstanding phtographer is not the one with most expensive camera, he or she is the one who makes best use of the camera available.

How Data and Emotion Work in Marketing

I came across Kristin's article "How data can turn you into the big dog." for a good reading today...it starts with the following paragraph:
The problem with marketing and sales is that they are the functions inside companies most likely to be driven more by emotions and anecdotal "evidence" than they are by facts. The result is never as profitable as it could be.
And ends with:
These companies shift from emotion-driven sales and marketing to data-driven sales and marketing. Their marketing and selling departments become as professional and manageable as finance and manufacturing. They are never blind-sided. They know what their customers are thinking and what they want. They know what their competitors are doing and how to sell effectively against them. They make every sale that can be made. They dominate their markets. They become "the big dog."
This is such an interesting topic so I left my comment on Pragmatic Marketing's Blogs:
"Data" will take effective only when it turns into "information" and "intelligence".  During this process of transforming, people's market sense, emotion and intuition are all involved. So i would say once the messy emotion-driven marketing turns to data-driven marketing successfully, it's time to call "emotion" back to help making decisions quickly.
A data-driven sales and marketing model is like photographing with right exposure, it makes sure the photo is taken "correctly" only. To take an excellent commercial photo requires a very good and distinctive sense of the photographer, not only the right settings.
Here I'd like to further discuss about what "data", "information" and 'intelligence" refer to in marketing.  For example, 'our key competitor "M" deducted their selling price of "N" product by 10%." - is regarded as 'data".  And "This makes the average selling price on the relevant market lower than ours by 7%." - is called "information".  Then "if our selling price didn't go down by 6%, this key competitor's market share will increase up to 5%." - is "intelligence"!  Above were explained in more details in the Chinese issue of Harvard Business Review (2004.12) - the most expensive magazine I ever bought!

(Mo-tse & Migratory Bird)

Visual Future (可视化的未来)

I am getting to "form" a picture in my mind for my future.  Then I appear to myself as someone running on a sunny day, following my own head which was carried by a flying bird in a blue sky.   That not only refer to "where i am going to" - freedom, but "how to get there?"- flying. :)

Visual PMF (可视化的实效营销框架)

I received an email from the director of marketing at Pragmatic Marketing on the other day.  In my reply email to this kind gentleman, I said "posting the Chinese translation of Pragmatic Marketing Framework on my site is a way to show my love in the idea of "visualization" for anything I'm interested in.".

True... I have been addicted to getting use of graphics, pictures whenever possible for presentation to others or myself, to visualize an idea, some emotion or a process.  That might explain further why I was deeply attracted to this amazing interactive PMF (click the link to see the updated version) immediately when I discovered it in year 2004.

(Self-Portrait Fun)

About Birds' Flying

About birds' flying, I assume:

  • Birds must be open-minded, they fly and see things from their wide-angle view.
  • Birds spend most of their life time flying on the way, they don't have to bring belongings like you and me when travelling. Their life style is simple: fly, no matter how difficult it could be!
  • To fly freely like birds is the dream of human being, which will have won for ever!

"Every mile and every year, time and distance disappear... and I just know one thing, love comes on the wing. Tonight I will be by your side, tomorrow I will fly."  - this is the lyric of my favorite song in the movie "Le Peuple Migrateur (鸟的迁徙)":

A creative photographer Matt posted 5 of his very impressive photographs with an inspirational title "Beware the 5 Stages of Grief (悲伤的五个阶段)" in the group of "Telling a story in 5 frames (Visual story telling)" on flickr. Here they are:

1. Denial否认 2. Anger生气 3. Bargaining谈判 4. Depression消沉 5. Acceptance 接受

Then I found it funny to interprete it into a complete different story about a mum and her three kids. So I wrote:

 Family Break (离家出走)

The famiy had been having a peaceful and quiet life till the three rebel kids: red, blue and green decided to make a "Family break":

    • 1st photo: The three kids jumped to escape
    • 2nd photo: Only the green kept rising, the blue and red were caught by mother's gravity
    • 3rd-4th photo: The blue was struggling till exhausted
    • 5th photo: The mother became very angry while the green retuned...

Actually at the beginning, I thought the cup of wine could represent the earth, and the three kids would refer to some typical creatures living on the earth - that would be a real "big family" but too complex to explain in a short story.

Anyway, the simple the better.
